"Diamonds aren’t forged under pressure for everyone," said Cameron Mason, reflecting on his recent performance where he secured the 21st position at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships last Sunday. This outcome was a disappointment for Mason, who is a four-time British champion in the sport.
In a candid Instagram update following the race held in Hulst, Netherlands, Mason shared his thoughts: "I often find that my best performances happen almost accidentally, as a result of pursuing something different or seeking out a new sensation." He elaborated, saying, "For me, achieving a specific result doesn’t always carry the weight it should, even though it’s a significant aspect of professional sports."

Recently, Mason has been dedicating more of his training efforts towards off-road cycling, which involves an increased focus on gym workouts and strength training. This strategic shift aims to build the explosive energy required to navigate challenging cross courses effectively.
"I’ve got a solid grasp on how to train, recover, push through tough times, compete, eat well, and rest properly," Mason explained. "However, I still struggle to consistently apply this knowledge across every race and during crucial events. Despite my understanding of what drives my performance, I find that it's often the smaller, unpredictable elements that take up my thoughts and analysis."
Mason reassured his supporters by emphasizing the importance of maintaining a short memory in the face of both victories and setbacks. "I’m discovering that it’s essential to embrace the challenges and uncertainties that lie between the enjoyable moments in the sport," he remarked. "It’s this very complexity that fuels my desire to compete and keep striving for improvement."
