Meet Sprout: The New, 'Approachable' Robot
Sprout, a groundbreaking robot, is set to revolutionize the way we interact with machines. With its friendly demeanor and unique design, Sprout is a far cry from the sleek and intimidating humanoids we've seen in the past. Standing at 3.5 feet tall, this robot is designed to be approachable and comfortable for people of all ages. Developed by Fauna Robotics, a stealth startup, Sprout's creation took over two years of secret research and development, with the goal of making robots more accessible and user-friendly.
What sets Sprout apart is its charm and design. Unlike the intimidating humanoids built by companies like Tesla, Sprout's soft, padded exterior of foam makes it appear more like a friendly companion than a machine. Its emotive expressions and blinking lights are reminiscent of the droids from Star Wars and other endearingly clunky robotic sidekicks from animation and children's literature. Fauna Robotics co-founder and CEO Rob Cochran explains that the inspiration for Sprout comes from beloved animated characters like WALL-E, Baymax, and Rosie Jetson, rather than the more ominous science fiction of Westworld and Terminator.
Sprout's capabilities are impressive, despite its small stature. It can dance the twist or the floss, grab a toy block or teddy bear, and even hoist itself from a chair to take a stroll. It also knows the office layout well enough to be sent on missions, such as checking the inventory of the break room refrigerator. Sprout walks slowly but steadily on uneven ground, and it's designed to be safe and non-intimidating. If you step in front of it, it won't crash into you; instead, it will plan a new path around you.
Ana Pervan, a Fauna research scientist, highlights Sprout's user-friendly design. She believes that Sprout's cuteness and non-humanoid features make it more fun and less creepy. Cochran agrees, stating that Fauna is the first American company to actively ship robots as a developer platform, and they have been hand-delivering the first models. Early customers include Disney and Boston Dynamics.
As Sprout's public debut marks the beginning of an industry shift towards building 'approachable' robots for homes, schools, and social spaces, it's clear that Sprout is a significant step forward in making robots more accessible and user-friendly. With its charming design and impressive capabilities, Sprout is poised to change the way we interact with machines, making them more approachable and enjoyable for everyone.
